Between the 12th and 19th of August 9 cadets and 2 staff from 2388 sqn visited RAF Leuchars on the sqn's annual summer camp. For many cadets the chance to go on camp is the highlight of the many activities they can participate in within the Air Training Corps.
This year’s camp was held at RAF Leuchars in northern Scotland. The station is the most northern defense station on the U.K main land. Having three squadrons of Tornado F3 aircraft as well as various other units and sections. The week was jam packed with activities including a night navigation exercise on part of the airfield and a visit to a former nuclear shelter from the cold war, now turned into a museum. Cadets were also shown around sections on the station, including Fire section, ATC (Air traffic control), 56(r) squadron, 43 squadron, AMF (Aircraft maintenance flight), MRT (Mountain rescue team) and the Graphics section. Cadets had the opportunity to sit in a Hawk jet on a training sortie from RAF Valley. The cadets were also shown round a Tornado F3 fighter jet and also where aloud to sit in the jet its self. Also the cadets visited different support sections such as the ejector seat bay, and survival equipment store. Through the week they also went swimming and were given the chance to complete their swimming proficiency awards.
There was also a day trip to Dundee where the cadets went shopping and looked around the famous ship the RSS Discovery which Captain Scott used on his famous Antarctic expeditions. Various sports activities were held through the week with some cadets also given the chance to fly in a grob tutor of 12th AEF squadron. They finished the week off with a disco in the junior ranks mess.
The week was very team orientated with cadets from 2388 sqn making friends with other cadets from different squadrons from all over the South and West Yorkshire area. All the cadets who went commented on how fun even though it was hard work the week was.
